It was less than a year ago that my friends and I started organizing themed speed dating events. From a group joke turned reality, we cannot believe how we were able to put up such an interesting event even if we usually get raised-eyebrows and half-hearted giggle from those who are too conservative with the word “dating” or worst, “speed dating”.
It was in September 2013 that we put up Telu Events. “Telu” is derived from a Javanese word meaning “three”, a (seemingly obvious, haha!) tribute to the founders – Darika, Anna and I, who had worked together under the International subsidiary of a gaming company. More so, the word was a common joke we used when we “baby talk” (yes, we came to that phase!), laughing at topics we agree in and saying “true” (pronounced as “te-lu”).
Most people think that speed dating is only for people desperately looking for love. However, based from what we saw and experienced, this is not always the case! On our first event, I engaged in the program as one of the participants to interact with the guys and get their feedback on the event. I cannot remember anyone telling me he was there for love (or maybe they don’t want to admit it haha!). Most of them just wanted to meet new people — know what they do for living, get connections, practice their social skills — and if not, just wanted to experience what speed dating is.
Speed dating has long been a taboo subject. I say, if people can only be more receiving to such events, who knows? The best prize — love. Consolation — friends. Hey we’re already in the 21st century, win-win, isn’t it?
Here are few photos on our first event. The theme is “Filipino Movies Love Teams”. We purposely blurred the faces to protect the privacy of our participants.
..and these are the photos during our second event. The theme is “Travel”. We also have a new partner, Maiah, who took the place of Anna for Marketing as she’s currently exploring life outside of the country.
We are happy to note that on our first event, we had a successful couple — Rodwin and Mdee– now celebrating their 6th monthsary come July. You can read more about their love story HERE. Meanwhile, our 2nd speed dating event established good friendship among participants– updating us of their dinners and out-of-town trips.
That’s it for now. <3 always, Irene
